Protective equipment against chemical hazards: understand the differences between Type 4 and Type 6 garments

Since November 20, 2014, Ordinance No. 452 of the extinct MTE (Ministry of Labor and Employment) establishes that protective equipment against chemical risks must be manufactured, verified and tested in light of the international ISO 16602: 2007 standard. With regard to the standard, we at JGB serve three types of results, Type 4, Type PB (4) and Type PB (6). In this post, we are to explain the difference between them. Let us check it out!

Chemical Risk: Type 4 clothing – Protective clothing resistant to sprayed liquids (spray)

            Type 4 clothing is a protective equipment that is characterized by its protection of the user’s entire body, with chemical spray-proof liquid connections between different parts of clothing, gloves and boots.

            When it comes to protection against Type 4 chemical risk, safety clothing must pass an assessment of resistance to penetration by liquids under pressure, spray test and present materials, which display chemical resistance to permeation. In the case of Type 4, the whole suit is tested, including closures and its due connections.

Chemical Risk: Type 6 clothing – Chemical protection clothing with limited protection against chemical liquids.

Type 6 garments also have the characteristic of protecting the user’s entire body from liquid chemicals, but with limited spray-proof connections between different parts of clothing, gloves and boots. The limitation is related to the pressure and flow of liquids that are used in the test, which are milder than the test conditions of the Type 4 garment. When it comes to protection against chemical risk Type 6, the safety clothing must undergo evaluation of resistance to penetration of liquids, limited spray test and present materials that demonstrate chemical resistance to liquid repellency.

Partial chemical protection

            Both Type 6 garments and Type 4 garments may be of partial chemical protection (PB – partial body), when they do not provide full body coverage – for instance, Type PB (6) and Type PB (4).

            In this case, the protective equipment for chemical risk must contain materials that have resistance to penetration by liquid under pressure or resistance to permeation for Type PB (4), as well as resistance to penetration by liquid and repellency for Type PB (6).

Chemical hazards and Certificate of Approval (CA)

Nowadays, only 8 chemicals have been properly tested and appear in the CA:

1. Methanol;

2. Acetone;

3. Dichloromethane;

4. Toluene;

5. 40% NaOH;

6. Sulfuric acid 96%;

7. Nitric acid 65%;

8. Ammonia 25%.

The other chemicals might be tested and presented in complementary reports.
